want you to receive "Real Food" from local Orkney producers
that has not been mass produced and
is made from as many local ingredients as possible. Many of our producers
are very small and cottage based industries who produce limited stocks.
So you really are recieving unique real food you simply will not find
outside Orkney or in any supermarket.
Grimbister
Farmhouse Cheese

Hilda Seator and her husband founded "Grimbister
Farmhouse cheese" in the parish of Firth just outside Finstown
on the Mainland of Orkney. It is now run by their daughter Anne from
the same farm. Their .crumbly
farmhouse cheese is made from their own herd of fresian diary cows and
has a soft but firm texture with a creamy taste. Its a unique small
farm based business making a truly natural product. Anne supplys some
very posh resteraunts within Orkney and as far away as London, but you
will not find this cheese in any shop outside Orkney.

Fishermen's Society Ltd


A
local Orkney Fishermen's Co-operative run by Stewart Crichton, who you
see here is based in Stromness and operates two modern crab processing
factories and exports live seafood, Lobsters, velvet and brown crab.
They produce our crab meat and crab terrine for our hampers.

Orkney
Isles Preserves is a small family run business run by Glynis Leslie
on the island of Shapinsay- a short 25 minute ferry trip from the Mainland
of Orkney and the home of Balfour Castle. Glynis makes jams and chutneys
using traditional methods and recipes that have been handed down over
generations. There are no mysterious secret ingredients of methods -
just the belief that if you start with the best quality raw materials
you will always have a superior end product. Where possible all the
raw materials are sourced locally by this small cottage industry Island
based producer.

Bakery


Browns of Westray is a small family bakery based
on the Northern Island of Westray in Orkney. They make homebaked products
from oatcakes to sliced loaves and caraway biscuits to the best ginger
parkins you could ever taste! We have an exclusive Orkney fudge shortbread
covered in chocolate especially made for us which we very nearly run
out off every Christmas. They also bake a great rich fruit Christmas
cake covered in thick icing with almond marzipan- its just like my Mother
still bakes for our Xmas and their famous ginger Parkin biscuits - perfect
for dunkin in your tea!.

Wine Company
The Orkney Wine Company
is based just outside Kirkwall, it is the most Northerly winery in the
UK and is a small family winery run by Emile and Marjolein van Schayk.
The family moved to Orkney in 1997 from Holland. Emile van Schayk started
making wine as a hobby after getting his first recipe from a retired
shepherdess, Sarah Lenaghan. The wines are made in a traditional way
with berries, flowers and vegetables, many locally grown in Orkneys
clean island air. The alcohol content is higher than from grape wines
due to its natural fermentation. The majority of Orkney Wine is sulphur-free,
alcohol is the preservative. So you do not have to worry about a hang
over!
All the wines are suitable for vegetarians.
Orkney
Cheese 

The story of The Orkney Cheese Company really
began with the setting up of a new factory on July 1st, 1946 at a former
RAF camp just outside of Kirkwall, capital city of the Orkney Islands.
At the end of World War Two the need for milk supplies decreased sharply
as the garrison was run down, resulting in a large liquid milk surplus
therefore Orkney Cheese was founded. Their main product is Orkney Cheddar
- renowned throughout Scotland and further afield. It is matured for
between 15-18 months and sold as Extra Mature Cheddar.

For centuries Orcadians have been famed for curing
herring and the Sutherland. family who owned Orkney Herring which is
now part of the Orkney Food Company are proud to be part of that tradition.
Their recipes for their marinated products are closely guarded family
secrets to ensure their products are uniquie in taste, texture and appearance.
New products are always being introduced with salmon rolls, prawns and
crayfish added to their range and an unusal seaweed relish.

Argos bakery is based in the small fishing town
of Stromness in Orkney still a family owned business they make fantastic
biscuits and bakery products. One of which is beremeal biscuits made
with " Orkney beremeal" grown and ground by Barony mill in
Orkney, see the picture of the mill above - a truly unique product.

Fudge
The famous " Orkney Fudge" is hand made
from the finest ingredients in the clean, fresh atmosphere of the beautiful
Orkney islands. Originally called "Robertsons Fudge" it has
been made to a long held secret recipe strongly guarded by Mr Robertson
himself. In the summer of 2009
Argos bakery purchsed the company from Dennis Bichan who still owns
The Orkney Creamery. The fudge is still made to the same recipe and
Argos have already introduced a new product called Orkney tablet.

and Gardens Oatcakes and Biscuits
In 1912 Gilbert
Archer (the grandfather of the present Chairman) purchased the Kirkwall
Bakery - Gardens. It amalgamated with the Stromness oatcake company
Stockans in 1986 and the outcome of this is the famous award winning
Stockan & Gardens brand of oatcakes and biscuits.

Island Produce Chutneys
Orkney Island Produce is made exclusively for
Judith Glue by Orkney Isles Preserves in Shapinsay - the Really Garlicky
chutney and Really Chilli Chutney taste just like they sound and are
only available to buy through Judith by mail order or through her shops
in Orkney and Inverness.

Smoked Salmon, Cheese and Meats

Brothers Erik and Ewan Donaldson run Orkneys award
winning local butcher which was established in 1955 by their father
and smoke local Orkney organic salmon, hot smoked salmon, cheese, smoked
beef and ham and also a brand new product Hickory ham all in their .premises
in Kirkwall.

Park Malt Whisky
Highland
Park whisky was founded by Magnus Eunson in 1798 when distillers operated
outside the law in order to avoid paying heavy taxes. Magnus was a lay
preacher by day and an illicit distiller by night and kept his contraband
under his pulpit! Highland park 12 year old has an amber glow and a
distinctive taste of smokiness and honey with a hint of peat. You can
visit the distillery and visitor centre in Orkney and learn how the
whisky is made.
My sister Jane also has a selction of original paintings on view at
the distillery which she was commissioned to paint by Highlandpark when
she was in her teens!

Scapa
Distillery was established in Orkney in 1885 Scapa produces a truly
unique malt whisky with a silky smooth heather honey taste. Its a whisky
which you just do not see everywhere and often many people prefer its
smoother silkier taste to the peatiness of Highland Park. Infact we
are lucky to still have some of the last remaining stock of the Scapa
14yr old. It is not possible to visit Scapa distillery which looks over
Scapa Flow hence the name but its a must to taste in or out of Orkney.

Calum
and Heather MacInnes run The Island Smokery in Stromness where they
smoke mature cheddar from the Orkney cheese company, in mild and dark
smoke, garlic sold in packs of two bulbs and a smoked garlic dip.. They
produce an unusal range of confectionery called Orkney Puffin Poo! collected
from the cliffs of Orkney - only kidding its actually white chocolate
with coconut. Or you may want to try their chocolate seagulls eggs and
Orkney chocolate pebbles.

Westray Chutney is based at Cleaton
House Hotel on the beautiful island of Westray in the Orkneys. All their
chutneys are handmade by Lynne Casson using traditional methods with
the finest ingredients. No artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives
are used, just natural fresh ingredients.

Seafood
Founded by William Jolly over 50
years ago and based in Orkney this thriving Fishmongers business deals
with a range of fresh fish and local shellfish. A traditional kiln -
the same one has been used for decades forms the centre of the processing
area and is used to smoke salmon, kippers, mackerel, mussels , and meats
and more. Traditionally brined using salt and sugar salmon is cold smoked
over an oak wood fire before being sliced by hand many customers comment
on it's delicate, subtle flavour.

Vera
makes her cheese in her home in Orkney. Her recipe was handed down to
her from her mother and she makes what Orcadians call " Queaky
cheese" a mild white cheese with a queaky texture. A truly unique
product only produced by Vera in her kitchen.

Omand Honey
Erlend makes his honey part time at home as
he also has a full time job managing
The Shore hotel. So its not always easy to get stocks but thats what
makes his honey even more special.A pure Orkney product made by a very
small producer.

Brewery Real Ale

Real Ale brewed in Quoyloo, Sandwick by The
Orkney brewery which is housed in the former schoolhouse situated one
mile from Skara Brae in the heart of Neolithic Orkney. The unrushed
Orkney culture with its traditional values influences the way they make
their beer. Undivided attention is given to each stage of the brewing
process to ensure that this beer reaches you in perfect condition. This
timeless approach has helped The Orkney Brewery win many national and
international awards for both their cask and bottled beers.
