Beaches
Broch of Birsay

BROCH OF BIRSAY BEACH- Recommended by Jane Tait. "One of my favourite beaches where l can walk across the causeway and collect shells in the abundance of rockpools" From the beach you can walk across a causeway at low tide that takes you to a tidal island with Pictish and Viking settlements that are open for visitors from mid June to September Telephone: 01856 841815 for crossing times. Often you can see the locals rowing their boats out to collect creels as there are still small working slipways on the beach. WHERE? The Broch of Birsay is in the West Mainland of Orkney. While in the village of Birsay why not also visit St Magnus Church, if you walk around the outskirts you will find gravestones buried on the flat like flagstones with ancient carvings on them.

Warbeth Beach

WARBETH BEACH- Recommended by Judith Glue "Always a great beach where l take my dog as there is also a long path that takes you from Warbeth round to the Stromness golf course" This beach was used for collecting and drying seaweed, you can still see the remains of the stone dykes that were for draping the seaweed over to dry it. There is magnificent views of the Hoy Hills and the Island of Graemsay from Warbeth. WHERE? Take the high back road as you go into Stromness and turn right at the roundabout- if you can call it that! Then go straight ahead till you see a turning on the left beteen the stone walls marked Warbeth. You should see the graveyard in the distance at the bottom of the road.
