ORKNEY ISLAND KNITWEAR
THE
HANDKNIT NORTH
RONALDSAY CREW SWEATER
These
unique North Ronaldsay handknits have been made exclusively in the Island
of Westray by local handknitters using the traditional method of two needles
to knit. Each garment can take up to six weeks to make but we always seem
to have a waiting list for them, so please be prepared to wait for your
order. The North Ronaldsay sheep is a rare breed whose origins date back
to Neolithic times, over the centuries this ancient breed has evolved
without any cross breeding. They are the oldest living breed of sheep still
surviving in Northern Europe. They are very hardy and are forced to live
on North Ronaldsays foreshore by a 5-7 foot high drystone dyke 12 miles
long that encircles the Island. They eat a diet of seaweed which produces
a unique fleece- you will even find tiny pieces of dryed seaweed caught
up in the fibres of the yarn which is actually spun in North Ronaldsay,
Orkneys most Northerly Island.
