Judith Glue and The Real Food Cafe

Judith Glue and The Real Food Cafe

The Real Food Cafe is situated at the back of Judith Glues shop
an Aladdins cave situated opposite St Magnus Cathedral.
Everything is cooked in our open to order with our Real Food team lead by Head Cook Kirsty Aim who has many years of baking and cooking experience over 17 years. Enjoy drinking  a well chosen glass of good wine , local gin or local Ale or Malt along with your food  as we are licenced and also except children of any age on our licenced premises.
We serve cooked food to 5/5.30pm Monday to Saturday in Summer season with hot drinks cakes till 5.30. Sundays are shorter but food is still normally 4/4.30pm

Our Real Food Cafe  ethos is always to incorporate as much local fresh Orkney produce as possible in our dishes and make fresh on the spot, as these days customers want to know the providence  of what is on their plates and where it is sourced locally.

Our blackboard changes daily throughout the day depending what is coming out the pot and what has run out. We make our own Vegan soup fresh every day  and bake our own Orkney cheese scones, fruit scones and our very own recipe of Bere Bannock that is  unique . Vegan and Gluten free choices such as salads soup, sand wichs  are available and we have gluten free bread, cakes and oatcakes. We only have a small kitchen but we always accomodate your dietaty needs - please ask your server if you need any information

We normally have very fresh Orkney crab on 4 or 5 days  - it is a must that it is fresh  but it does arrive just on certain days and sells fast - so we do run out and serve it on a first come basis  !
Fresh Crab salads, Crab rolls , Crab baked tatties - peedie pots of Crab served with oatcakes , Shapinsay chutney and salad garnish are also on our menu if you would just like a wee taste.
Smoked Salmon from the North Isle of Westray is always on our menu and is delivered by boat two or three times a week in the summer
Westray marinated roll mop herring , Orkney hot chunky cheese melts freshly grilled with Orkney Hickory Ham as an extra if you wish., local butchers bacon, eggs , sausage BLT rolls are simple but delicious light lunch choices.
This is the way we work and make our food  always homemade - fresh on the spot never mass produced and only the best quality produce made in Orkney.
Orkney Seafood and Variety Taster boards and  homemade Quiche  are baked fresh every day.
Many folk mention the waft of fresh morning baking with our Dark Island  beer cake and rich high in coca solids topped with thick  cream or our famous Orkney fudge cheesecake and selection of our own tray bakes, such as Orkney millionaire homemade shortbread, cream topped carrot cake de, lemon and drizzle cake and of course sticky chocolate brownies.

Its simple great food that we revel in  cooked with love and and care and these days  sadly you have to search Scotland to find it,  luckily in Orkney we are very pleased to say you can still find gems of places on our mainland that care about what they serve you on your plate.
We provide  an excellent choice of Orkney ice cream and  why not choose your ice cream cone from choices like Orkney fudge, Rhubarb and custard , original vanilla - my favourite and of course more amazing choices on offer and  sit on the Kirk Green basking nfront of our  magnificent St Magnus Cathedral watching the local antics of a Wedding blackening- an ancient local tradition when the ready to be newly weds are paraded around our small windy streets on the back of a truck with family and friends banging drums singing songs and having a wild time- its not for everyone to enjoy as the Bride and Groom are hideously covered in unruly messy stuff and then usually tied to our Market cross with bubble wrap,  when they make every effort to escape, but are watched eagerly by friends standing buy waiting to catch them - its a very messy business - totally unpoliced which is un heard  of these days . a site to be holden !!
A few weeks later they are outside our Cathedral parading in their finery with gorgeous Wedding  dresses , kilted best men and an array of bridesmaids for all our  world wide  visitors and locals to people watch often with horse carriages, vintage cars or very expensive tractors .

There really is never a dull moment on Saturdays in the Summer in Kirkwall

Why not visit us and sit ionone of our Orkney chairs you will love the photo opportunity as you dont see these chairs in the flesh often now as they are made by few Chair makers who all have a long waiting list - Fraser Anderson makes ours if you visit him Fraser who started was as a teenager and also owns a great antique rare Orkney  Chair collection with many originally made from ships beams and driftwood

A very good selection list of our local Ales, Gins, Rum, Vodka, Aquavit and of course our two famous Scapa and Highland Park Malt whiskies are always available with very good choice of red white and rose wines,  as l have a husband who loves his wine and chooses our wine list from our local Orkney supplier.  We are licenced and children are very welcome at any time of day in our cafe premises

We serve Orkney Aria Espresso  coffee ground here in Orkney, you can also buy it along with Orkney oatcakes, biscuits , shortbread. cheeses, smoked salmon , olives and a selection of local alcohol choices in our front shop.
Tea PIGS tea is also our chosen cafe supplier with Scottish break fast teas , Orkney milk shakes
