Machair is a rare, fertile, low-lying coastal grassland habitat found only on the exposed west-facing shores of Scotland and Ireland. Formed by wind-blown, shell-rich sand, it features vibrant, flower-rich meadows and is maintained by traditional crofting agriculture.
